I had an experience today that, well, while I wouldn't say it was life changing, it really made sense.
Sadly I had to attend yet another funeral. I spoke to a lady who is a greeter at my church. Just for the heck of it, I've been making little bookmarks with Bible verses on them for her to hand out to people. I use Gimp and Power Point to make fancy-schmancy backgrounds and print. Personally, I didn't think it was a big deal. Just a little nicety.
Well, this afternoon, the lady told me--that's right, TOLD ME--that people absolutely LOVE my bookmarks! The church has begun to take them to nursing homes, rehab centers, and the local homeless shelter.
I didn't realize I was making such a difference by doing something I enjoy--typing, arranging, and playing with fonts and colors.
If you like something, please take the time to let the person know. Chances are, your words of encouragement might be the difference it makes for that person. Obviously, don't try to placate someone by telling them these things if they don't affect you. People will begin to wonder about your sincerity. But at the same time, if someone has sincerely helped you, impressed you, or stood up for the right thing, please tell them. They may have felt like quitting, but those two words--"Thank you"--might make all the difference in the world.
People have to put up with enough seriousness, beatdowns, heartaches, whispers behind their backs, criticisms, rudeness, and cold shoulders. Nobody can read minds. They need to know that they've genuinely touched you. Notice I said "genuinely."
I'm going to make more bookmarks with more Bible verses, in more colors, for more categories. I'm even going to try to make some in Spanish. Eventually I hope to find a laminator.
I just had to say it.
