Oh my god, I almost started crying when my mom showed it to me! She's so amazing!

I almost started crying too. Pretty much only over the fact that everyone was judging her before they heard her and when she was good I was so happy for her. This just proves how judgemental people are. I mean did you see the teenaged girl rolling her eyes in the crowd? Jeez. And when she started to sing and she wasn't bad, everyone automatically loved her. Who thinks if she was some normal looking young woman everyone sure would have said she had an awesome voice, but they wouldn't be absolutely amazed and blown away by it. She would have gone through and she wouldn't have become world famous over night. That was my mini-rant of the day. ;D

Actually, I think people would have been blown away by her voice no matter what she looked like -- her voice is astoundingly beautiful, especially those opening notes. But you're right, if she had been "average attractive" (which, by the way, is much more attractive than most of the people I see on the street -- but I'm as biased by media images as everyone else) it wouldn't have brought tears to the eyes. (Yeah, mine too. ;D) And the video certainly wouldn't have gone viral. I'm kind of interested in the reaction that seems to have been almost universal -- tears, or close to it, and a burgeoning joy, and a sense of wonder. The judges and audience seemed to have it, and I certainly did, and you guys seem to agree. Part of the joy and wonder is purely because of the voice, I think -- those first few moments of her performance were transcendant. But where did the rest of it come from? Was it watching a glorious victory, because she created beauty? Was it empathy, realizing how many insults she's endured because of her looks and that made the triumph even sweeter? Was it a little shame and embarrassment for having assumed she'd be off-key and squeaky? It's kind of nice that everyone's so happy for her. And about her.

For me it was definitely the empathy. If I had been able to see it for the first time it was aired on TV (even though I can't because I'm not British xD) it probably would have been the shame and embarassment for thinking she'd suck too. But since I knew she was going to be good when I watched the video for the first time, it was the empathy because I felt bad that everyone thought she was going to be some crazy. Then when she was super good it was just like whoa, everyone can shut their faces because this lady rocks and she knows it (even if she was surprised by the judges saying yes, when she was singing to me it looked like she knew she was awesome and was thinking "yea that's right" xD). It was just like her voice was... I can't even think of the word. But proving everyone wrong in a huge way and it was nice to see.
