I was sitting on the porch and a chipmunk showed up on the top of the stone wall and started cheeping at me. So I cheeped back at it, and it just looked startled and sat down, staring at me like I'd said something rude. It was only about 12 feet away! After a few seconds, it gave one last cheep and stomped off. The rabbits aren't exactly skittish around here, either. They don't even freeze when humans show up, much less flee -- I was taking the trash bin out to the street yesterday on the way to work and there was one smack in the middle of the flagstone sidewalk, nibbling away at the clover in the cracks. It ambled off the walkway, sat up in the grass looking at me from all of six feet away, and ambled right back to resume its breakfast. It's kind of cute, actually.

Same porch. Same wall. Chipmunk (possibly the same one) sitting in the same place, not cheeping. I said, "Hi, chipmunk" and it calmly looked at me. I said "How's it going?" and it calmly looked at me. I started humming the Christmas song ("me, I want a hula hoop!") made famous by Alvin and the Chipmunks -- and it fled in terror.
