Chapter 8
Metro Court
Dawn and Katie heard someone talking outside the room. They both gave each other the ‘are you ready look’. The door opened and one of the guards stepped in the room. Before he had a chance to do or react to anything, Dawn and Katie were attacking them the best they could. Considering Dawn possibly have some cracked ribs and Katie having a bullet hole in her shoulder. They managed to grab his gun and shoot him. The two girls were thankful it was a suppressed gun, so there wasn’t a loud bang. The two girls quickly ran out of the room and down the hall towards the elevators.

Jason’s Apartment
“Stone Cold are you sure you want to do this? I mean it could be an evil trap set by the evil one to get you to do his dirty work for him.”
“Spinelli you don’t think I don’t know that?”
“Well even if the evil one keeps his end of the bargain, who will you ask to let go?”
Jason looked down at the floor. “I-I-I honestly don’t know yet. I mean there’s the kid, but I just…” Jason said before there was a knock at the door.
He opened it and saw a gun laying on the gorund. Jason slowly bent down and picked up and saw a note attached to it. ‘Use this’ it read.
“Stone Cold, do you have any idea what your getting yourself into?”
“Yes and no.” Jason said just before walking out the door.
A concerned Spinelli grabbed the phone and quickly dialed a number.

The Basement of the Metro Court
“Luke run!!!” Ben, Dawn’s brother screamed at his son. The young boy looked at his dad who was trying to fight off one of the guards. “Run Luke! Get out of here!!” he yelled again. There was a sound of gunshot and Luke watched as his father fell to the floor.
“Dad!” the boy cried out and watched as his dad grabbed another gun and shot the man who shot him. Luke quickly ran over to his father, who was bleeding out badly. “Daddy, why?” the boy cried out.
“Son. I love you with all my heart. Don’t ever forget that okay?” Ben said as he ran his fingers through his son’s hair. “I’m going to stay here because if daddy moves too much it’ll slow you down. I want you to take this gun, and run as fast as you can and get out of here.”
Luke just stared at his father’s pleading eyes. “I can’t leave you…”
“Yes you can. I need you to do this for me.”
Luke cried some more. “Okay daddy.”
“Alright, use this gun if someone tries to hurt you in anyway.”
Luke just nodded.
“I love you Luke.”
“I love you too daddy.” Luke said and then kissed his dad on the cheek. Ben grabbed him and pulled him into a hug. He closed his eyes and started crying. He knew he probably wasn’t going to be alive much longer. He knew this was probably the last time he’d hold his son. Reluctantly Ben let go and watched as his son ran up the stairs. “Hang in there dad. I’ll be back with help.” Luke said and then continued running. Ben just laid his head back down and cried. He had such a brave boy.

The Metro Court
Katie and Dawn leaped behind a maid cart as they watched one of Craig’s men walk by. Both of them held their breaths trying to keep as quiet as possible. They knew if they made it to the lobby they’d be able to make a clean break. But that wouldn’t be possible, knowing that they still needed to rescue Ben and Luke.
“Clear.” Dawn said as she struggled to get up.
The two girls made it to the elevator and quickly closed the doors. “I can’t believe it.” Katie said completely shocked that they made it.
“Me neither. But this nightmare is far from over.” Dawn said before the elevator reached the first floor.
Dawn stepped out of the elevator, but before Katie had time to, a man jumped in there holding Katie back and quickly pressed the button to close the door. She screamed out Dawn’s name and Dawn quickly turned around and tried to stop the doors, but it was too late.
A gunshot sounded from the elevator and Dawn quickly threw her hands over her mouth. “Oh my god.” She said quietly to herself.
An alarm sounded and Dawn watched as a couple of hotel workers ran to the elevator. “What is that?” Dawn asked a brunette women with a thick NY accent.
“Um, it’s the alarm for if the elevator gets stuck. I could’ve sworn I heard a gunshot so I’m guessing that’s what caused it. I just hope whoever is in there is ok.” Olivia said as she ran to some hotel management workers who were jogging towards them in the hall.
Dawn slowly backed away and ran to the lobby desk. Luckily since everyone was seeing what was going on with the elevator, no one noticed her using the phone.
“Hello?” the voice answered.
“Jason?” Dawn managed to ask.
“Dawn?! Is that you?! Where are you??”
“I can’t talk too much right now.”
“Are you ok? Is Katie ok??”
“I’m in the Metro Court lobby. I’m about to head into the basement.”
“Not alone. I’ll be there in a minute.” He told her. “Wait a second, I? Is Katie not with you?”
“Jason, I can’t explain it right now.”
“Alright, just lay low I’m pulling up right now.”
Dawn hung up the phone and waited a minute. She saw Jason running over to her. He wrapped her up in a hug, but as she flinched he pulled back. “What happened to you?” he asked noticing all the bruises.
“What do you think?”
Jason looked over at the elevator. “What’s going on?”
“I’ll explain it in a minute. But I know she’d want us to use that for an advantage to save Ben and Luke.”
Jason shot Dawn a funny look, but followed her as she made her way to the basement.
Dawn was completely shocked to see that there wasn’t a guard at the door. She was even more shocked to see two bodies lying on the floor. She almost threw up when she saw one of them.
“Ben!” she yelled as she slid on the floor beside her brother.
“Dawn I don’t have much time.” He said to the best of his ability. Sweat was pouring off of him, and he was in a lot of pain. “Luke is possibly in the lobby somewhere. Please find him.”
“I will, we go get you some help.”
“Dawn listen to me. I’m not going to make it. Please tell Luke that I told him he was a hero today and that matter no what I’ll always be watching over him.”
Dawn began crying, listening to her brother talk like this. “Ben please…”
“Dawn, listen to me, you’re my baby sister and I love you so much. I would love if you took care of Luke for me.”
Dawn slowly nodded her head.
“Could you give him this?” he asked as he placed his army dogtags in her hand.
She closed her hand, clinging onto them. “I love you bro.” she said, then kissed him on the forehead.
“I love you too.” His words slowly faded.
Dawn checked for a pulse. When she burst out into tears Jason knew what happened.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Elevator of the Metro Court
Katie was trying her best to fight off the man in the elevator. She had done pretty good so far. Although it was pretty much useless at this point since the elevator was stuck and if he got full control of the gun, he’d probably shoot her.
“Why are you doing this?!” she screamed and then with one big shove, the guy threw her on the floor. Katie closed her eyes as she heard him cock his gun. “Please.” She begged.
The guy started laughing a little. “So you beggin now.” He said and started laughing again.
“You know, go ahead and shoot me!” Katie screamed at the top of her lungs. “But know when this elevator starts moving again, your going to have a lot of explaining as to why you are standing over a dead body holding the gun!”
“Very good point, but little girl, I can easily say you shot yourself. I mean c’mon how hard could it be.” He said and then pointed the gun back at her.
“Then how would you explain the first shot?!”
“Well I could say that I was trying to get the gun from you, and a shot went off towards the control panel, which isn’t really lying because they could see the bullet hole there.”
“Go ahead and shoot me then, seems like you have everything worked out.”
The guy pulled his gun back up.
“Just know one thing.” Katie said. “My best friend, won’t stop until your dead. And I know my new friend Jason Morgan probably won’t either. I mean he may even get his boss Sonny Corinthos to hire some people to kill you.”
“You really think your going to scare me?”
“Katie kept her eyes fixed on the gun.
“You know, you really are a pretty girl.” The man said as he slowly knelt down beside Katie.
“Get away from me.” Katie sternly said.
He laughed a little more and stroked her hair. She quickly turned her head to try and avoid him touching her again. This of course ticked him off, so he stood up and pointed the gun back at her. “I don’t like being rejected.”
“Get used to it.”
With those words, he fired off a round. Katie felt the bullet pierce through her abdomen. She tried to fight to keep her eyes open, but the room was getting fuzzy and before she knew it she was out cold.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
5 minutes earlier
“Dawn…” Jason said.
She wiped the tears on her cheek. “I know.” She said as she stood up. She held onto her ribs and followed Jason up the stairs. Once they entered the lobby, they quickly began looking around for Luke.
Jason kept eyeing over towards the elevator, having a feeling something was off about the situation. He was hoping and praying that his gut feeling was wrong. And that being that Katie was in there.
“Luke??” Dawn yelled at.
Jason quickly looked over at Dawn. “What are you doing, you have to be more quiet.”
“I’m sorry.” She said.
“Aunt Dawn??” a little voice asked from behind a bush in the lobby.
“Oh my gosh Luke!!” she exclaimed as she ran over to her crying nephew. She leaned down and threw her arms around him and held him tightly.
Just about that time, they heard a gunshot coming from the elevator.
“Hurry up and get this thing going again!” Olivia ordered.
“Dawn get him out of here, I’ll find out what’s going on!” Jason yelled, looking back at Dawn.
“I can’t leave.”
“Why?”
“Because my brother is dead, Katie is probably dead, I don’t want anything bad happening to Luke!” she screamed.
Both Luke and Jason looked at Dawn with a certain eye. “Daddy?” Luke said, just before bursting out in tears.
Spinelli walked over to the three. “Queen of cyberspace, would you like me to watch over the innocent one while you talk to Stone Cold?”
“Thank you Spinelli.”
Spinelli just nodded as he led Luke over to the chairs. “Jason…”
“She’s in the elevator isn’t she?”
Dawn nodded her head. “We had escaped from the room and made it there. When it reached the first floor I stepped off and from out of nowhere this man jumps in. She cried out my name, and when I turned around to see what was wrong, the doors were closing. There was a gunshot, and then an alarm sounded. Some woman told me that was the alarm for if the elevator got stuck.”
Jason ran his fingers through his hair. “I can’t believe all this is happening.” He said real low.
“It moving again!” a worker yelled out to Olivia. Jason and Dawn heard it and quickly ran over to see what had happened. When the elevator reached the first floor once again, the doors opened and there was a bloody mess. Jason shoved through all the workers and knelt down beside Katie. He put pressure over the wound and looked back up at the man who was standing there with bloody hands. “I am going to kill you.” He said, just low enough only the man could hear it.
“Sir, please move.” Some of the workers said to Jason. They finally pulled Jason back and he walked over to Dawn who was just standing there looking at the site in front of them.
Chapter 8 preview-

Chapter 9
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The Hospital
“How is she doctor?” Dawn quickly asked as soon as the doctor approached them.
“Well it looks really bad. The bullet she took earlier didn’t do much damage, but with that blood loss, it didn’t help her when she got shot the second time.”
“Will she make it?” Jason asked.
“It’s too soon to tell. The next 48 hours are critical.” The doctor said and then walked away.
“Excuse him?! Can he really just walk away like that?! What if I had more questions!” Dawn yelled.
“Dawn calm down.” Jason said.
She ran her fingers through her hair. “Sorry.”
“You don’t need to apologize, you’ve been through a lot since you got to Port Charles.”
Dawn looked over at her nephew who was sitting with Spinelli, playing on the computer. “How can I take care of an 8 year old boy by myself?”
“You’ll have plenty of help.”
“I don’t know if I can. I mean as much trouble as I am in, and all this crap with Craig…”
“I’ll take care of Craig. You worry about yourself and Luke.”
“Jason, it’s not going to be that easy. Craig murdered my brother and possibly my best friend. You think I’m going to let him get away with it?? What if you were in my position?”
“I know how you feel. It’s just that right now, you’ve got to think about someone who needs you. What if something happened to you. What would that put Luke through?”
Dawn looked down at her feet, knowing Jason proved a point. She bit at her bottom lip and went to go sit down by Spinelli and Luke.
Jason looked over and noticed Monica walking by. “Monica.” Jason said and then walked over to her.
“Hey Jason! I’m about to check on your two friends over there.”
“Thank you. How’s Katie?”
“Did her doctor not tell you anything?”
“He said the next 48 hours are critical, but nothing else.”
“Well that’s pretty much all that can be said Jason. She lost a lot of blood.”
Jason rubbed his temples trying to relieve the pounding headache he had. “Can I see her?”
“Make it quick.”
Jason nodded his head and followed Monica to her room. When they got there Jason pulled up a chair and sat down by her bed. Monica smiled and left the room so he could be alone.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“Spinelli, thank you for everything.” Dawn said with a smile.
“It is the Jackal’s honor to help thy queen of cyberspace in any possible way the Jackal can.”
A little laughter came from the little boy sitting beside them.
“What are you laughing at Luke?” Dawn teased him.
“He called you queen of cyberspace.”
Dawn smiled. “Yes he did.”
“Can I have a nickname too??”
“Of course!” Spinelli explained. “Since you show great skills of the cyberworld at such a young age, I shall call you prince of cyberspace!”
“Awesome! I’ve always wanted to be a prince!”
Dawn laughed a little and sat back and watched the bond that had already formed between Luke and Spinelli. A familiar face appeared beside Dawn.
“Lucky…” she said.
“Okay, someone has some serious explaining to do.”
Dawn looked over at Spinelli, who just nodded. Dawn got up and led Lucky over to where Luke couldn’t hear any conversation. “I can’t talk about it right now.”
“You have to. When a woman is shot, not once, but twice. When I find two dead bodies in the Metro Court basement and another body upstairs in one of the rooms. That’s when I think someone better start explaining. Not to mention you look like you were hit by a truck.” He told her. “Look I’m not trying to make your life miserable, I’m trying to help you.”
“Lucky, it’s best interest for my nephew if I do not say anything at the moment.”
“Then I’m afraid I’ll have to take you in for obstruction of justice.”
“Now no one is taking anyone anywhere right now!” another voice said. ”This woman has been through an ordeal! Look at her, she needs medical attention!” Monica exclaimed.
Lucky looked back at Dawn before saying, “fine, but after your done with her, I want the truth or she’s going to be arrested.”
Lucky walked away and Dawn looked back at Monica. “Thank you so much.”
“It was my pleasure sweetheart. I’m Monica Quartermaine, also know as Jason’s mom.”
“Oh. Wow, it’ a pleasure to meet you Mrs, Quartermaine.”
“What do you say we get you and that cute little boy checked out?”
“Okay.” Dawn nodded.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Jason just sat, staring at the body lying in the bed. He wished that it would’ve been him lying there, not her. He kept thinking over and over again how he said he was going to help her, but he couldn’t do one simple thing.
“Katie, I’m so sorry.” He said real low. “I promised I’d help you, but look what happened.”
Jason listened as the heart monitor beeped over and over again. That sound was a common factor in Jason’s life. He’s had to listen to it too many times to count.
“Katie…..” Jason said pausing a minute, just before there was a slight knock on the door before it opened. “Sonny?”
“What happened?” Sonny asked as he entered the room.
“Long story.” Jason replied.
“Well I know half of it because Spinelli called me earlier and told me you might be making a stupid mistake. Something about a guy kidnapping Dawn’s brother and nephew then kidnapped her and Katie. Then you were going to kill someone for the guy who took them in order to release one person.”
“Well nothing went down like it was supposed to. This whole night has been a nightmare.”
“Well everything except one thing.”
“What’s that?”
“Michael’s surgery. He made it out of it okay, and now all that’s left to do is wait for him to wake up.”
“That’s great!”
“Yeah. That’s what I came to tell you.”
“I appreciate it. I really needed to hear some good news.”
“It’ll be even better when he wakes up … well if he wakes up.”
Jason nodded and looked back at Katie. “Guess I’ll be waiting for two people to wake up.”
“How is she?”
“The doctor told us the next 48 hours are critical.”
“I hate it when doctors don’t tell you anything.”
Jason nodded in agreement.
“Well I’ll leave you alone so you can finish saying whatever it was.”
“Thanks. I’ll come see Michael here in a second.”
“Okay, I think it’d help him.”
Jason once again just nodded his head and then looked back at Katie.
“See Sonny isn’t such a bad guy.” Jason said with a little laugh, knowing what she thought of Sonny. “Katie, I really like you. I’ve never really met anyone quite like yourself….” Once again a knock at the door interrupted Jason.
“Stone Cold…”
“What is it Spinelli?”
“I’m afraid to say this yet again, but I think Dawn went after the evil one.”
“What?!”
“We were in the room with Luke and she asked to be excused for a moment and then she was gone.”
“How do you know she didn’t just go to the bathroom or something?”
“… because she was talking about going after the evil one.”
Jason stood up and quickly left the room. “Spinelli, stay here with Luke, make sure nothing happens to him or Katie.”
“Of-Of course.”
Jason nodded and then quickly ran out of the hospital.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“You know Craig, you’ve got a lot of nerve to stick around here.” Dawn said, pointing the gun at the man in front of her.
“I could say the same about you.” Craig replied, his gun pointing at her as well.
“You know maybe it is a good thing you did stick around. Cause then I wouldn’t get to make you pay for everything you’ve done to my family.”
“You had everything coming. All I did was ask you one simple task!” he yelled at her.
“Kill someone?!”
“You killed someone tonight.”
“Yeah cause he was going to kill me and Katie. See your brother Is an innocent man!”
“Oh please he’s far from innocent.”
“Cause he’s not one of your followers?”
“You know Dawn, I can very easily shoot you right now, but I’m giving you one more shot. Kill my brother and I’ll disappear forever.”
“Now now Craig, why on earth would I do that if I can kill you and make you disappear forever?”
“Dawn…” Jason said from the doorway.
“Jason what are you doing here?”
“I can’t let you do this.”
“Why not?”
“Because you have Luke to think about.”
“And that’s exactly what I’m doing. If I don’t kill him he’ll always be there making my life even more miserable.” Dawn cried.
“Put the guns down!” a voice yelled just before the room was swarming with cops. Dawn looked at Jason and then looked over at Lucky who was pointing his gun at Craig and Dawn. “Put them down, now!”
Dawn slowly put hers down as well did Craig. A couple of officers quickly handcuffed Craig. “Dawn, I’m sorry but I had to call them.”
Dawn wiped the tears off her cheek and looked back over at Jason. “she’s gotten to you hasn’t she?”
“Who?” Jason asked, confused.
“Katie.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’ve read a lot about you Jason Morgan. You’re not the type to call the cops and have them do their job.”
“She’s right. When I got a call from you I could not believe what I was hearing. Jason Morgan actually doing something by the books was quite shocking.” Lucky added. “Now I better get out of here before I find a reason to lock both of you up.”
Jason looked back at Dawn after Lucky left the room. “You think Katie had something to do with this? I did it because of Luke. I’ve seen first hand what violence can do to a child. Look at Michael Corinthos for instance.”
“Ok, that could be the reason, but admit it.”
“Admit what?”
“You have feelings for Katie.”
“What?”
“Don’t pretend you didn’t hear me.”
Jason smiled and shook his head. “Let’s get back to the hospital.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The Hospital
“Aunt Dawn!” Luke exclaimed as he ran up to her and gave her a big hug.
“Hey little guy.”
“Spinelli is so cool! He’s going to teach me how to play the video game he created! It’s called Stone Cold Saga.”
“Did you tell him thank you?”
“Yes I did.”
Dawn smiled, but that smile faded when she knew it was time to bring up Ben. “Luke, we need to talk.” She said as they both walked over to some chairs to sit down. “What happened to your dad tonight was a very scary thing.”
Dawn watched as his facial expression changed.
“I was able to get to him just before he died. He told me that your were a brave man.”
Luke looked down to his feet. “But I wasn’t able to save him.”
“Luke just the fact that you tried your very best to, was all that mattered to him. He loves you more than you could ever imagine.” At this point both Luke and Dawn were crying. “Some of the last things he said to me were to tell you that he loves you and that he’ll always watch over you. Also he told me to give you these…” Dawn said pulling out his dog tags.
Luke cried a little more when he saw them. “Aunt Dawn, what’s going to happen to me?”
Dawn broke out into a little smile. “I’m going to take care of you. I may not be the best, but you can believe I’m going to try my best to be.”
Luke nodded a little and then put the dog tags on. Dawn smiled and pulled him into a hug.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“Where am I?” Katie groaned from the hospital bed.
“Can you hear me?” Patrick asked as he shone a light into her eyes.
“Loud and clear.”
“Your at the hospital. Do you remember what happened to you?”
“I was trapped in an elevator, and this guy had a gun.”
“You were shot, twice.”
“I got shot earlier in the park.”
“Yes I know. I’m going to run a few tests. I’ll be back in a minute, I know there are some people that want to see you.” Patrick said and then left the room.
“How are you doing?” a voice asked as he entered the room.
“I guess I’m ok. Please tell me everyone else is ok?”
Jason smiled a little. “Yeah, well kind of. Luke and Dawn are safe.”
“What about Ben?”
“He didn’t make it.
“Oh my gosh.” She said closing her eyes. “How’s Dawn holding up?”
“I think since she has Luke, she’ll be ok.”
Katie nodded her head. “Craig?”
“On his way to jail.”
Katie smiled. “So this nightmare is officially over?”
“Well, we still need to be careful. There’ll always be enemies out there.”
“We?” Katie questioned with a smile,
“Yeah …. We.” Jason said as he looked up at her.
“So after the big mess me and Dawn pulled you in, your still sticking around?”
“According to Spinelli you’re the female version of me, so would you have stuck around if the situation was opposite?”
Katie laughed a little before grabbing onto her abdomen area because it hurt her to laugh. “Point taken.”
“Take it easy.” Jason said, and pulled her hand off her stomach. “You might pull all the stitches out or something.”
Katie smiled and shook her head. “Jason Morgan you’re one protective son of a gun aren’t ya?”
Jason laughed a little.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“So what’s going to happen now that the evil one is behind bars and everyone is safe?”
“Well almost everyone. Katie is still out cold.”
“I have a feeling the female version of Stone Cold will be just fine.” Spinelli said with a smile.
“Well in that case, when Katie is able to go home, me, Katie, and Luke will go back to the penthouse we bought that is a couple of doors down from you guys.”
“So you won’t be venturing off to another town?”
Dawn shook her head. “These past two days have really been an eye opener for me. It’s time I settle down in one town so I can call it home. Maybe work on a long time dream that I’ve always wanted to achieve.”
“Sounds really nice.” Spinelli said and then let his cheesy grin spread across his face.
Dawn nodded and then coughed a little bit.
“Would you like for the Jackal to get you some water?” Spinelli asked, and then Dawn coughed a little more.
“Thank you.” She said just before grabbing her chest in pain. Spinelli noticed this and quickly knelt down by Dawn.
“Are you ok?” he asked with great concern.
She motioned over at a couple of doctors walking down the hall. “Get them.” She told Spinelli just before coughing again.
“I need some help over here!” he yelled.
Chapter 10 preview-
Dawn has a collapsed lung, the doctors need to insert a chest tube. Katie tells Jason something that has her completely scared; he reassures her he’ll stay by her side. Michael wakes up.

Chapter 10
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The Hospital
“Ho-how is she?” Spinelli asked, with Luke standing right beside him.
“I guess she took a pretty nasty beating. She had a fractured a rib and I guess it was fine earlier, but the more she moved and stuff, it wound up puncturing her lung.”
“Is she going to be ok?” Spinelli asked with great concern.
“We inserted a chest tube to help, so we’ll see how it goes from there. She’ll definitely need to rest.”
“Ok, thanks doctor.”
Luke looked over at Spinelli. “What do we do now?”
“We wait.” Spinelli replied, looking around for some chairs. He spotted some, and him and Luke went to sit down.
“Hey Spinelli, Katie’s awake.” Jason said as he approached the two.
“That’s good news to hear.” Spinelli replied.
Jason looked over at Luke and could tell he was scared about something. “Is everything ok?”
“My aunt is sick.” Luke replied.
Jason looked at Spinelli with a confused look.
“I guess when the evil one hurt her, he fractured a rib which led to her lung collapsing. They inserted a chest tube to help relieve the pressure.”
“Well is she going to be ok?”
“The queen just needs to take it easy and let the tube do it’s job, and I have great faith that she’ll be just fine.”
Jason nodded. “Ok, come and find me if anything changes. I’m going to go visit with Michael for a moment.”
“Ok.” Spinelli replied.
After Jason left Luke looked over at Spinelli. “Spinelli?”
“Yes?”
“Do you like my aunt?”
Spinelli smiled. “Yes prince of cyberspace. I believe I do.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“Dr. Drake right?” Katie asked as he looked over her chart
“Yes indeed.”
“So you’re the one who preformed that surgery on Michael Corinthos?”
“Yes, that was me.”
“Oh. Well they said you did a real good job because he made it out of surgery.”
“It was a miracle he made it through.”
Katie hesitated a moment before saying the next thing that was on her mind. “Since I don’t really know Michael, can you tell me what his chances are of waking up?”
“If you don’t mind me asking, and I don’t mean for this to sound offensive in any way, but why does it concern you? Well that didn’t come out sounding very nice, I’m sorry.” He apologized.
“No don’t apologize. I understand the whole question thing. I’m just a good friend of Jason Morgan and I can see how much he loves that kid, so I was just kind of, curious I guess.”
“Oh. I can tell you that if he doesn’t wake up soon, his chances will slowly deteriorate,”
Katie nodded. “Okay, a complete 360 on the subject, but when will I be able to get out of here?”
“In the morning, we’ll see how well you’re feeling, and take you down to talk with a physical therapist.”
Katie looked down at her hands.
“Something wrong?”
Katie ran her fingers in her hair. “I didn’t know how to say it earlier. Well I didn’t want to say anything earlier because I knew if I did then I’d realize it is happening and I’m not just in some nightmare.”
“What is it? Are you in any pain?
“Well of course I’m in pain, but that’s not the problem. The problem is, earlier I tried getting out of the bed but I can hardly move my legs. I mean I moved them a little, but the pain got to bad I had to stop.”
“Ok.” Patrick said as he walked to the foot of her bed. “I’m going to lift your leg, I’m going to gently push it towards you. I want you to try and push back.”
Katie nodded her head. Patrick did just as he said, and when he started pushing, Katie attempted to push back. She cried out in pain, so Patrick gently put her leg back down. He picked up the other one and did the same thing, but the end result was just like the other one.
Katie was now in tears from the pain and the thought of her not ever being able to walk again.
“I’ll call a specialist first thing in the morning.” Patrick said just before leaving the room.
Katie looked over at the wall and began thinking about how her life was going to be different.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“Any change?” Jason asked as he walked approached Sonny in the hallway.
“No.” Sonny replied. “Carly’s in there with him now.”
Jason nodded and walked into the room. He quietly shut the door behind him and looked at Carly, then at Michael.
“Jason, I’m so glad you came to see him.” She said and walked over to him, giving him a hug.
“Of course I’d come to see him. I love him like my own.”
“I know you do.” Carly said with a smile. “So how are your new friends?”
“I really don’t know. Katie was shot, twice. Dawn has a collapsed lung.”
“I’m so sorry Jason. Are they going to be ok?”
“I think so.”
Carly turned her head and looked at Michael. “Jason I want him to wake up.”
“I know you do. Just keep praying and have faith.” Jason reassured her.
Carly nodded and wiped the tears that had escaped.
“I’ll be back in a little while to see how he’s doing. I’m going to go check on Katie real quick.”
“Ok.” Carly said and watched as Jason left the room. She turned her attention back to Michael and sat back in the chair next to his bed.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“Hey.” Jason said as he walked back into the room.
“I thought you’d be gone for a while.” Katie said.
“Well I can leave if you want…” Jason said pointing back at the door.
“No. Stay. Please.” She said. “I could use the company.”
Jason sat down in the chair beside her, and immediately noticed her eyes. He could tell she had been crying. “What’s wrong?”
“What do you mean what’s wrong?”
“You’ve been crying.”
“No I haven’t.”
“Yes you have.”
“No I haven’t.”
“Yes, you have.”
“I think I’d notice if I was crying.”
“You were.”
“Jason! Gosh you’re one persistent son of a gun!”
Jason smiled. “I know.” Katie just smiled and shook her head. “So you going to tell me what’s wrong?” he asked again.
Katie hesitated before answering. “A specialist is coming in the morning to find out how bad my legs are.”
“What do you mean?”
“Earlier when you left the room, I tried getting out of bed for a moment, but I could only move my legs so much before they were in screaming pain.”
Jason sat there for a moment, he didn’t know what to say, or how to say it. “I’m sorry….” He finally said.
Katie looked around the room and then back to Jason. “Man when a bomb is dropped on you like this, it’s just so surreal. I don’t know how I’m supposed to react or what I should be doing to help myself get better or whatever.”
“I think you should just try and get some rest tonight. You’ll be ok.”
“How are you so sure?”
“I just am.” He said with a small smile. “I’ll help you in any way you need me too.”
Katie smiled. “Jason Morgan, you may be one over protective, persistent son of a gun, but you have moments when you can be very encouraging and sweet.”
“I try my best.” He replied with a small laugh.
“So are Dawn, Luke, and Spinelli doing ok?” she asked.
Jason covered his hands over his face when she asked that. He had been so overwhelmed with everything, he forgot to tell Katie about Dawn. “Katie…”
“What happened?” she quickly asked, noticing how he was acting.
“Dawn’s lung collapsed. They operated on her and placed a chest tube in, so now it’s just up to the tube for it to do it’s job. If it does, she’ll be just fine.”
“I am ready for this nightmare to be over!” Katie said covering her face with her hands. “The only good part about these past 2 days …” she started to say but Jason cut her off.
“Me meeting you.”
Katie looked at him, kind of shocked that he said that. “Well I was going to say ME meeting YOU, but that works just as well.” She said with a small laugh.

“Queen of cyberspace?” Spinelli asked before he entered Dawn’s room.
Dawn smiled when she saw Spinelli and Luke standing in the doorway. “Come in.” she quietly said.
Spinelli and Luke smiled as they walked into the room. “Aunt Dawn!” Luke exclaimed.
“Hey buddy. You been good for Spinelli?” she said, basically in a whisper.
Luke nodded his head. “Spinelli is so cool!”
“I may be the first to say that it is truly my honor to be able to teach the young prince how to play Stone Cold Saga.”
Dawn smiled. “Thank you so much Spinelli. For taking care of Luke.”
“When will you get out?” Luke asked.
“In about a week. So if it’s alright with Jason and Spinelli … “
“Of course we’ll watch the young prince of cyberspace.”
“Thanks.” She smiled weakly.
“And I will be here if you need anything!”
Dawn nodded slightly. “Spinelli, maybe we should let my aunt rest.” Luke suggested.
“That’s a good idea.” Spinelli agreed. “What do you say we go tell Jason and head to the penthouse?”
Luke smiled and nodded. “Bye Aunt Dawn. Feel better.” He said before waving to her. He was too scared to hug her, due to the chest tube.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.” Spinelli said with a smile just before leaving the room.
Dawn watched them as they left. She couldn’t help but think how she now has a second chance at life. This really great guy, who she likes, a lot, comes in and treats her so well. And then she will be raising her nephew.
Chapter 11 preview-
The next week is one crazy week for Jason and Spinelli. While Katie and Dawn are in the hospital, they try to raise this young boy to their best ability. But what happens when Luke starts getting curious about stuff when so many people stop by Jason’s?

Chapter 11
Two Days Later
“Spinelli Spinelli Spinelli!!!” Luke screamed as he ran into the living room of Jason’s penthouse.
“What is it prince of cyberspace??” Spinelli quickly asked.
“Aunt Dawn just called and she said they’re going to be taking the tube out tomorrow!!!”
“Well that is certainly good news!” Spinelli said, with his face lighting up. “And a good reason to celebrate!”
“Can we go to the park or something?” Luke asked.
“Um, I don’t see why not. A walk through the park might be quite refreshing.”
“Cool! I’ll go change clothes.” Luke said and took off running to the room he was staying in.
Jason dragged down the stairs, looking really tired, and worried. “Stone Cold, you look like you have missed several needed hours of sleep.”
“It’s because I have. With Michael’s chance slimming down each day that passes for waking up, and Katie’s physical therapy starting today, I just couldn’t sleep.”
Just after he said that his phone started ringing. He grabbed it and answered it while rubbing his temples.
“Whoa whoa whoa, Carly slow down.” He said with a certain look in his eye. “Ok. I’ll be there as soon as possible!” Jason said and quickly hung up the phone.
“May the Jackal ask what that was about?”
“Michael. He’s awake.” Jason said and quickly ran out the door.
“Well that is wonderful news to hear.” Spinelli said looking around the empty room.

The Hospital
“Miss Weston are you ready?” a nurse asked Katie.
“I think so.” She said as they helped her into a wheelchair.
They rolled Katie out into the hallway and just as they did Jason almost practically ran into them. “Watch out Morgan.” Katie said with a small laugh.
“Katie I’m so sorry.” Jason quickly apologized.
“It was an accident.” She told him.
“Wait are you already going to physical therapy?”
“Yeah.”
“Jason, I heard about Michael. Quit your flabba jabbin’ with me and go be with him! I’m a big girl I think I can handle some pt.”
Jason smiled. “Thank you.”
Katie watched as he disappeared down the hall and looked back up at the nurse. “Let’s get ready to rumble.” Katie said with a small, forced smile.
The nurse rolled Katie down to the physical therapy area of the hospital. When Katie got there she looked around nervously, while waiting for the person who was going to be working with her.
- - - - - - - - - -
“Jason.” Michael said right after Jason ran in the room.
“Hey buddy. How are you doing?”
“Ok, but why isn’t anyone telling me what is going on? I want to know and I want to know now.”
“Michael, just calm down. It’d be best for you not to know right now. You had a very dangerous surgery, so we need to wait for you to heal a little before dropping any news on you.”
“Jason, you know how stressful it is for me with people coming in here saying stuff like I’m a miracle, I can’t believe you’re finally awake, and so on??”
“Yes I do.” Jason replied.
“That’s why I was hoping you’d be a little more understanding as to why I feel the way I do.”
“Michael, just please wait a day or two when you’re feeling a little better and then I’ll explain everything.”
“Ok.” Michael said.
Jason nodded, and just about that time Carly and Jax walked in. “Well I’ll leave you three alone for a little bit. I’m going to go see if Katie is doing ok.” Jason told them. “I’ll be back in a little while?”
“Ok.” Michael replied.
Jason left the room and shut the door behind him. He made his way downstairs and saw Katie working with the physical therapist. He could tell she was in pretty bad pain, but she was still working as hard as she could. He stood there for a minute debating whether to stay where he was at, or go in. He was about to go in, but the physical therapist motioned the nurse over to take her back to her room.
When they got out in the hallway, Katie saw Jason standing there. “Jason…” she said, kind of shocked.
“How’d it go?”
Katie looked up at the nurse, with the can you give us a minute look. The nurse smiled and nodded. “Well good news is, the physical therapist thinks I’ll be able to walk again. It’ll just take a while to get my legs functioning properly again.”
“That’s good news.”
“Yeah, but I am hurting like crap right now.”
“You want me to take you back to your room?”
“I want to go home.”
“Well I’m sorry Miss Weston but the best I can do is take you to your room.”
“Come on Mr. Morgan I’m sure you’ve sprung out of this joint a time or two.”
“But that’s me, not you.”
“Come on, teach the young grasshopper a lesson or two.” Katie joked.
“Come on.” Jason said, laughing a little, as he started pushing her.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The Next Day
“Spinelli I’m hungry.” Luke whined.
“Let me go see what we have.” Spinelli replied, jumping up off the couch. The two wandered into the kitchen where Jason was sitting in. “Stone Cold I thought you were at the hospital.” Spinelli said.
“I was. Came home for a little while to get a bite to eat.”
“Ah I see.”
“I’m hungry.” Luke said again.
Spinelli opened the freezer and looked around. He spotted a frozen pizza so he just popped it in the oven. Just about that time, the doorbell rang. Jason hopped up and went to the door. “Carly…” he said kind of shocked.
“I needed to talk to you.” She said with tears in her eyes. Jason opened the door all the way and motioned for her to come in. She sat down on the couch and saw Luke watching her.
“Well hey cutie what’s your name?” she asked him.
“Luke.” He replied very shyly.
“Nice to meet you Luke, I’m Carly.” She said with a small smile.
“Why are you crying?” Luke asked with great curiosity.
“Hey Luke why don’t you go in the kitchen with Spinelli.” Jason suggested.
“Ok.” He replied with an innocent tone and ran to the kitchen.
“What’s wrong Carly?”
“It’s Michael.”
“Is he ok?”
“Yeah, but he hates me Jason.”
“Carly he doesn’t hate you.”
“Jason he thinks I just lost faith and left him to replace him with this baby I’m carrying.”
“Carly he’s your son and he loves you. He just woke up from a coma, there’s gong to be some tension in the air.”
Carly bit her lip. “Oh and the worst part is Claudia waltzes right in the room, but guess what. Michael loves her!”
“She was there?” Jason asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Yes! She’s sitting there talking to him like they were bff’s for a long time.”
“Carly I’ll take care of Claudia. You just worry about yourself, your baby, and Michael.”
“Ok.” She said giving a small smile.
After talking a little more, Carly left and Spinelli and Luke came back into the living room. They all sat on the couch watching tv, eating pizza. Well that was until Luke spoke up.
“Where do babies come from?” Luke randomly asked.
Jason and Spinelli almost choked on their pizza. They then looked at each other with puzzled looks.
“Well, um, uh, see your mommy carries you in her belly for nine months.” Spinelli tried saying.
“I know that part. How do they get in their belly? Do they like just appear there?”
“Well not exactly. See when two people love each other very much. They might want to have a baby.” Jason said, trying to help out Spinelli out a little.
“So you and Katie are going to have a baby?!” he asked really excited.
The drink Spinelli had just taken a swig of was now spewing out all over the place. “Sorry.” He quickly said.
“Well would you look at that. Katie’s physical therapy starts soon so I better get to the hospital.” Jason said as he stood up.
“So are ya’ll going to have a baby?” Luke asked again.
“No.” Jason replied just before leaving the penthouse.
Spinelli looked at Luke, hoping he didn’t have anymore baby questions. “What do you say we head to the hospital to visit the queen? And you can probably get her to answer your question considering she is a woman.”
“Ok!” Luke said and grabbed his pizza and headed out the door.

The Hospital
“Jason great news!” Katie said real excitedly as Jason came into the room. “I get to go home!!”
“That’s great!”
Katie stopped smiling for a second. “You don’t look very happy.”
“Oh I’m happy for you. It’s just something else is going on.”
Katie slowly nodded. “Well you helped me out so I’m going to return the favor. What’s going on?”
“I don’t want to bother you with this right now. You got a lot on your plate.”
“Jason, you can tell me. Matter of a fact if I don’t talk about something other than my legs I will go insane.”
Jason smiled a little. “Well I told you the whole story behind Michael getting shot.”
“Yeah. Was it Ian Devlin?”
“Yeah. Well we just recently found out that there were more people involved with his shooting. We suspect that possibly Ric Lansing, Sonny’s brother, or Claudia Zacchara, Sonny’s wife may have hired Ian to take out Sonny.”
“But hit Michael instead.”
“Exactly.”
“Well maybe if I become ‘friends’ with this Claudia chick I can get some dirt on her.”
“No. I’m not putting you in any dangerous situations.”
“Jason, seriously. I’ve been, done, and seen it all.”
“Yeah but….”
“But I can’t walk right now. Please tell me that’s not what you were about to say.”
Jason looked to the floor. “Alright.” He said real low.
“Can’t hear you?”
“Ok. Just please be careful around her. She’s a dangerous woman.”
“Oh please dangerous is my middle name.” Katie joked.
Jason couldn’t help but smile. “Looks like we have something in common.”
“Maybe.” She said giving him a flirty look, just before busting out laughing.
“Oh somehow that reminds me…”
“What happened?”
“Luke asked me and Spinelli where babies come from.”
“Oh gosh what did you tell him?!”
“Spinelli said that they come from their mom’s, and he said he knew that, but he wanted to know how they got there. I started off by saying well when two people love each other they might decide to have a baby. He cut me off though so I wasn’t able to say much more thank goodness.”
“Well what’d he say when he cut you off?”
Jason turned a nice shade of red when he realized he just dug himself into a hole. “Uh, well he asked if, me and you were going to have a baby.”
Katie busted out laughing to the point she had tears coming down her eyes. “Oh my gosh Dawn is going to die when I tell her this! Luke is truly Ben’s son.” She said when she finally calmed down.
“I feel kind of bad because I didn’t know how to answer that so I left Spinelli to answer all the questions.”
“Let’s just hope he didn’t give too much information.” Katie said with another laugh. “So has Dawn had the tube removed yet?”
“They’re removing it now.”
“When will she be able to go home?”
“They’ll keep her overnight for observation and then she’ll be able to go home. She’ll be on bed rest for a couple of days and then she can slowly start getting back into things.”
“That’s good.”
Jason’s phone rang, so he pulled it out of his pocket and answered it. “Morgan. Yeah. Ok I’ll be there in a second.” He said and then hung up. “That was Sonny, he needs me at his house.”
“Alright. I’ll call you when I’m out of pt.”
“Ok, sounds good.” Jason said and left the room.
After Jason left, Elizabeth came in. “Are you ready to go to physical therapy?” she asked. Katie looked at her for a moment before saying yes. “Look Katie, I know I said some things to you, Jason, and your friend Dawn that I shouldn’t have. I had no idea what was going on and I should not have been so quick to judge you.”
Katie smiled and nodded a little. “It’s ok.” Elizabeth smiled. “Elizabeth?” Katie asked.
“Yeah?”
“Can I wheel down there myself?”
“I can’t leave you. Hospital policies.”
“Is there any way I can like get you to make an exception?”
“I’m afraid not. But I can help you into the wheelchair and let you have a moment to yourself.”
Katie smiled. “Thank you.”
Elizabeth helped Katie into the chair, and then left the room. Katie rolled out just after her. She asked another nurse where Michael’s room was and went exactly where she told her to go. Outside the room was this woman with dark black hair, wearing all black, pacing while talking on the phone.
“I don’t care. I just want you to take him out. He is making life to miserable for me and my baby!” she said real low on the phone. “Yes I know what I’m asking you to do and I am just telling you now, kill Jason Morgan!” she said and slammed her phone shut and put it in her back pocket. Claudia took a look around and saw Katie sitting there. “Can I help you?” she asked annoyed.
“Oh, no. I just got a little lost.” Katie said, trying her hardest not to just get out of the wheelchair and beat the crap out of her.
“Where are you trying to go?” Claudia asked.
“Physical therapy.”
“Ok. I can take you down there because I know where that is. My stepson is down there right now.”
“Oh ok. Thank you.” Katie said, putting on her best, forced smile. “So Jason Morgan dead huh?”
You could see as the color drained from Claudia’s face. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I heard you on the phone.” Katie said. “Oh you don’t have to worry about me saying anything. I can’t stand the guy.”
“Really?”
“Really. I moved here to Port Charles, just a couple of doors down from him, let’s just say things didn’t start off to well.” She told her. “Matter of a fact he’s the one who got me in this chair.”
“I see. So I’m not going to have to worry about you saying anything?”
“Nope. My lips are sealed. Oooo maybe after he’s dead they’ll sell his penthouse to me. It’s much nicer than my own.”
“I wouldn’t want to live anywhere where Jason Morgan has lived. There might be bodies stuffed in the walls or something.” Claudia said.
“Good point.” Katie said with a disgusted look on her face.
“Well here we are, physical therapy.” Claudia said stopping outside the door.
“Thanks.” Katie said. “Oh, and if your current hitman to take out Jason Morgan fails, give me a call.” Katie said with a smile. “I love guns, and I love when they shoot.” She added just as a nurse got her to bring her inside.
Claudia stood there for a moment, just staring at this person. She shook her head and headed back upstairs.
Chapter 12 preview
Katie finally meets Michael while in physical therapy. They talk for a little while and Michael quickly bonds with her. After pt, Katie calls Jason and warns him Claudia has a hit on him. Dawn goes home, and Spinelli is more than thrilled when she asks for his help.

Chapter 12
“So are you glad to be home?” Spinelli asked Dawn.
“Very.” Dawn said with a smile.
“Well I know Luke is excited.”
“Yeah he is.”
There was a brief moment of silence. “So I guess I’ll let you get some rest. If you need me, I’ll be three, doors, down.”
Dawn smiled again. “Thanks Spinelli. You are truly amazing. You have done so much for me, I don’t know how I will ever repay you.”
“You don’t have to repay the jackal. It was my honor to help you out.” He said softly.
“Aunt Dawn!” Luke hollered as he ran in the room. “Are you feeling ok?”
Dawn smiled at her nephew. “I am feeling great now that I’m home.”
“That’s good! Do you want anything to eat??”
“Well how sweet of you, but I am not very hungry right now.”
“Ok. If you need anything I’ll be in the living room.” Luke said and ran back out of the room.
Dawn was going to say something to Spinelli, but he was no longer standing there. She sighed to herself and stared up at the ceiling.

The Hospital
“So you’re the famous Michael Corinthos?” Katie asked the teenage boy sitting beside her.
“Yeah.” He replied. “Who are you?”
“A friend of Jason’s.”
“Ah, you must be the Katie he mentioned.”
“That would be me.” She replied with a smile.
“So what happened?” he asked, nodding towards the wheelchair.
“I was shot … twice.” She replied, slowly nodding her head. “You?”
“I don’t know. No one is telling me anything. Not even Jason. That surprised me the most because I could always count on him.”
“That’s gotta suck not knowing what happened to you. I know I’ve only known Jason about a week, but he’s a great guy. I learned to just trust him because no matter what, because he’ll always come through for you.”
“I know he will, but it’s just so frustrating. And physical therapy and crap, I don’t want to do. I just want to go home.”
Katie nodded her head. “I know what you mean. I wish I could just twitch my nose and get out of this chair and be done with pt.”
“Yeah.”
“I tell you what. Are you the betting kind of guy?” Katie asked with a smirk.
Michael looked at her. “Sure why not.”
“Let’s have a deal. First one to make it out of the chair gets one wish that the other one has to grant.”
“Well a reasonable wish. Nothing like too impossible.”
“Deal.” Katie said sticking her hand out.
Michael smiled and shook it. “Deal.” He replied with a smirk.

Katie and Dawn’s Penthouse
Dawn was lying in her bed, thinking about what had all happened the last week. “Ben, I know you’re watching over Luke and I from up there. I just ask that you help me protect that boy from all the dangers that we may face down the road.” Dawn said with a tear in her eye. She closed her eyes and prayed.
A loud crashing sound, followed by Luke screaming came from the kitchen. Dawn flipped the covers over and tried to get out of bed, but was in pain trying to move. She quickly grabbed her phone and called Spinelli. “Spinelli, quick! I can’t get to Luke!”
“Ju-just hang on.” Spinelli said and then hung up the phone. Dawn listened as she heard Spinelli run in the house, and into the kitchen. Dawn just sat there and cried. Once again she felt hopeless because she wasn’t able to help Luke. She covered her face with her hands, until Spinelli came in the room and shut the door behind him.
“Is he ok?” she quickly asked.
“Yeah. He just was trying to get a bowl and knocked a bunch of things over.”
Dawn let out a sigh of relief. “Gosh do you know how scary that was. Luke just screamed and started crying and I wasn’t able to help him.” She said through the tears. “What if that was someone coming for revenge for what we did to Craig.”
Spinelli didn’t know what to do. He just pulled Dawn into a hug. “The evil one is behind bars and rest assure, The Jackal and Stone Cold will never let anyone hurt you or the young one.”
Dawn just closed her eyes while Spinelli said those words. She felt safe for the first time in a long time. She actually believed Spinelli when he said that he would not let anything happen to them. She pulled out of the hug and stared into Spinelli’s eyes.
“Spinelli?”
“Ye-yeah?”
“Can you stay here until I can get on my feet? I mean, what if Luke had been hurt…”
“Of course I will stay here.” Spinelli said with a small smile. He was actually kind of disappointed for some reason. I guess he thought she was going to say something else.
“Thank you.” Dawn said with a weak smile. Before she could say or do anything else, she felt Spinelli’s lips connect with hers. Spinelli pulled back, obviously stunned at what he just did,
“I-I-I-I’m so sorry! I do not what came over th-the Jackal.”
Dawn laughed a little. “Spinelli it’s ok.”
“No it’s not! I did what I swore I’d never do. I took advantage of a woman.”
“Spinelli you didn’t take advantage of me….” Dawn tried saying but was interrupted.
“No. Nothing can excuse me for what I did.”
“Spinelli…”
“I hope you accept my sincerest apology.”
“Spinelli!” Dawn yelled.
“Yes?” he asked quietly.
Dawn grabbed his face and pulled him into another kiss.

The Hospital
“Miss Weston, please stop. You’re pushing yourself too much.”
“I’m not stopping.” She said through the pain and sweat.
“I’m asking you one last time, please stop.”
“I’m not stopping!” she snapped back.
The physical therapist was about to go get a doctor to help her get Katie back in her wheelchair. That was until someone threw her over her shoulders.
“Put me down!” she screamed.
He sat her down carefully in her wheelchair and shot her a look. “What are you doing?” he asked her.
Katie just looked down. “I just want to go home.” She said real low.
Jason sighed and wheeled her down the hall, back to her room. They had the discharge papers ready, so Jason decided he’d take her home. After they helped Katie into the car, it was a long silent drive. Jason would glance over at her from the corner of his eye.
They finally arrived at the building and Jason took her up to her room. “Thanks.” Katie said and unlocked her door. She wheeled in there by herself and shut the door practically in Jason’s face. She rolled to her room and shut the door behind her.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“I think Katie is home.” Dawn said to Luke and Spinelli.
“I’ll go check.” Luke said, jumping off the bed and running down the hall to Katie’s room. He knocked on the door, but no answer. “Katie it’s Luke.” He said.
Katie looked at the door and rolled back over to it and opened it. “Hey kiddo!” she said.
Luke ran up to her and gave her a hug, Katie was kind of shocked, but smiled real big when he did. “I’m glad you’re ok.” He said.
“Thanks sweetie. I’m glad you’re ok too.”
“You want to come to Aunt Dawn’s room with me? Spinelli’s in there too.”
“Not right now. I’m real tired and I think I better get some rest.”
“Ok. Sleep good!” Luke said and ran back down the hall to Dawn’s room.
“Is she?” Dawn asked Luke when he got back in the room.
“Yes ma’am. She said she’s real tired and she’s going to go to sleep.”
“Alright. I think you need to do the same Lukester.” Dawn said leaning over and tickling Luke.
He began laughing and trying to get her to stop. All Spinelli could do was look at the site before him and smile. He’s never felt a way about a woman the way he feels for Dawn.

The Next Morning
Katie woke up and tried to get in the wheelchair. Much to her surprise, she finally made it. She went into the kitchen and looked through the cabinets to see what there was. She saw a bag of chips so just grabbed that and a bottled water. Her cell phone that was sitting on the table began to ring so she rolled over and answered it. “Hello?”
“Katie, I made some breakfast. Luke and Dawn are over here so I wanted to see if you wanted some too.”
“Jason I am capable of cooking breakfast for myself.” Katie said and then realized how harsh she sounded.
“I just didn’t want you have to cook.”
“Jason, that’s real sweet, but I’ve really got to learn how to do daily stuff in this thing until I can get my legs working again.”
“I understand. Well if you change your mind, you know where I live.” He said and then hung up the phone.
She hung up as well and now was determined to cook breakfast for herself. She rolled back into the kitchen and saw some eggs in the refrigerator. “Mhmm.” She said and reached for the eggs. She grabbed some sausage as well and closed the door. “Bowl.” She said to herself, looking for a bowl to scramble the eggs in. Katie realized the bowls were on the top shelf of the cabinet.
“I can do it.” She said to herself as she pulled herself out of the chair. All her weight was on her arms as she was holding herself up against the counter. She rested her top half of her body on the counter, while reaching for the bowls with her available hand. When she did, the stack of bowls came crashing down, causing her to lose her grip and fall to the floor.
“Katie?” a voice called out to her. “Oh my gosh Katie!” Dawn said as she quickly knelt down beside her.
“I’m fine.” Katie told her, obviously irritated that she wasn’t able to do the simple task of making breakfast.
“Do you have a death wish or something?!” Dawn asked looking around at all the broken glass.
“I just wanted to make myself breakfast.”
“Katie, Jason made us some so we wouldn’t have to.”
“So just because they helped us once we have to fully depend on them??”
Dawn was kind of taken back, “Katie they want to help. And no we don’t have to fully depend on them, but do you honestly think you’re going to adapt being in that chair over night? If you have people who care about you willing to help you, I think you need to quit being so stubborn and let them!” Katie knew she proved a point. “Why are you being so stubborn about this? Jason told me it seemed like you were fine one minute, but that one physical therapy session, your attitude did a 180.”
Katie looked at Dawn. “I’m scared.”
“Scared of what?”
“Scared of falling for him.” She said unexpectedly. “Every guy I fall for ends up hurting me so badly, or hurting other people. The whole reason your brother is gone is because I fell for the wrong guy.” Katie said, trying to fight back tears.
“Katie, you’re always going to get hurt along the road, but that road will always lead you to your one true love.”
“I know, but I’m just tired of getting hurt.”
“I don’t know what else to say, except if it feels right, don’t fight it. If there’s one thing we should’ve learned from this mess, is that life is too short. You need to stop worrying about if a guy is going to break your heart, or if you will get shot again..” Dawn said the last part with a little laugh. “But are you seeing the point I am desperately trying to prove? These pain meds aren’t helping me think to well.”
“Yes.”
“Good, because after running out of stuff to say, and I’m probably going to have to double up on meds after me running in here like that.” She said laughing a little.
Katie just stared at the mess around them. “I guess I should call him.”
Dawn smiled. “I’ll head back over there and get him for you. There’s no way I can lift your heavy butt back into the chair.” Dawn joked with her and got up.
Shortly after, Jason appeared in the doorway. Katie looked up at him. For some reason she couldn’t help but bust out laughing. “What’s so funny?” Jason asked kind of confused.
“I really don’t know.” She said in between laughs. “I guess I am just realizing how annoying my stubbornness must be for you.”
Jason looked at the eggs and sausage sitting on the counter. He couldn’t help but smile. “Well I can’t say anything because I’m just as stubborn.”
“Can you help me up now?”
“What’s this? Weston asking for help?”
Katie glared in his direction. “Shut up.” She joked.
Jason shook his head and laughed. He picked Katie up off the ground and put her back in the wheelchair. He picked up all the glass and put it in the trash. “Would you like me to make you some breakfast?” he asked her.
“No thank you. Truth be told I had some chips, but when we were talking on the phone I wanted to prove to myself I could make breakfast.”
“Wow maybe you are a little more stubborn than me.”
Katie smirked at him. “Jason I’m sorry.”
“For?”
“For how I acted yesterday. You know the whole pt thing…”
“That was yesterday. It’s in the past, we don’t need to look back.”
Katie smiled, “Thanks.”
“Because if we turn around and look at the past, we aren’t paying attention and someone from the future shoots us in the back.”
“Are you trying to be funny Morgan?” Katie replied laughing. “Well, what if we don’t turn around, what if we keep looking at the future, and someone is the past shoots us in the back?”
Jason looked at her funny. “You are one violent women you know? You’re sitting there talking about us getting shot in the back.”
Katie gasped. “So not funny! You started it!”
The two of them busted out laughing.

Chapter 13
Week Later
“Spinelli?” Dawn asked as she walked into the living room.
“Yes?” Spinelli replied, looking up from the computer.
“You want to go do something? Like go out to eat or the bar? Just something to get out.” Dawn asked.
“Sure!” Spinelli said, jumping up from the couch. “But what about the young one?”
“He went with Katie to pt. He wanted to go for some reason.”
“Well in that case, shall we?” he asked with a smile, holding his arm out.
“We shall.” Dawn replied, and then hooked her arm in his.

The Hospital
“You did it Katie!” Luke exclaimed as he walked along side Katie’s wheelchair.
“Yes I did. Maybe you’re just my little good luck charm.” She replied reaching over and tickling him.
“Well I’ll come to all of your pt sessions if you want.”
“You are so sweet. But you’re a young boy, you need to be playing with your friends, and stuff. Not having to go to physical therapy with me.”
“But I don’t have any friends here.” Luke told her, and then looked down at his feet.
“Sweetie, you’ll make plenty of friends soon. You just got here so just give it some time.”
“I know someone just your age who would probably love to meet you.” Jason said as he walked over to the two. Jason knelt down to his level. “And matter of a fact he’s here in the hospital.”
“Really? Who?”
“Remember me?” Carly asked.
Luke nodded. “Carly, right?”
“Yes. I have a boy that’s about your age. His name is Morgan, would you like to meet him?” Carly asked him.
Luke looked over at Katie, who smiled and nodded her head yes. Carly reached out her hand and took his. She led him down the hall to go find Morgan.
“You’re so good with kids you know?” Katie told Jason.
“I love them, but I just don’t like bringing them in around the business. Look what happened to Michael. And then there’s the stuff that happened to my own son Jake.”
“Jason, you really do need to quit beating yourself up. Yeah being in the business didn’t help any, but it wasn’t your fault. Don’t sit there and go on about how you didn’t protect them enough etc. etc. There’s no way you could’ve know what was going to happen.”
“But I knew it could happen.”
“Jason Morgan I told you I didn’t want to hear it.” Katie told him, then stuck her hand in the air trying to get him to be quiet.
“I’m trying to be serious here.”
“Oh cry me a river. You’re always trying to be too serious. Let loose, have some fun! The muscles on your face need a break from keeping one look on your face all the time.”
Jason smirked at her. “You’re a real pain you do know that don’t you?”
“Honey why yes I do.” She replied with her thick southern accent. “That’s part of my charm.” She told him with a wink.
Jason laughed a little. “Only talking to you we can go from a serious talk to laughing.”
Katie just smiled. “Well, my cab is probably here. Do you think you can bring Luke home?”
Jason nodded. “That’s fine.”
Jason wheeled Katie down to the lobby to take her to her cab. After she got in and the cab started off, she realized she forgot to tell him the big news.

The Park
Dawn and Spinelli were walking trough the park holding hands. Spinelli loved being with her more than anything. There was just something about her that amazed him. “So what do you think of that?” Dawn asked, interrupting his thoughts.
“Um, uh, erm, what was it again?”
“You weren’t paying attention??”
“I kind of got distracted by you.”
Dawn smiled. “Aw you’re so sweet Spinelli.” Dawn said, and then gave him a kiss. “But back to what I was saying. I think I’m going to get a job at Kelly’s or something just until I can find a better job.”
“Well that’s a good idea. Since you will be settling down here, you’ll need a job.”
“Yeah. I guess Luke can stay with Katie, and when she gets a job we can hire someone to watch him.”
“Sounds good.” Spinelli said with a smile.
The two continued walking, talking, and laughing. That was until a certain blonde spotted them. “Spinelli.” Maxie whined.
“What is it Maxie?” Spinelli asked calmly.
“What are you doing?!” she asked pointing at him and Dawn holding hands.
“What does it look like I’m doing. I’m taking a walk with my girlfriend.”
“Girlfriend?” Maxie asked, and turned her head to the side while glaring at Dawn.
“You heard me, I’m not going to repeat myself.”
Maxie looked at Spinelli confused. “Spinelli… why are you acting this way?”
“Maxie, what part of you had your chance, but blew it do you not seem to understand?”
“Spinelli, this girl is changing you. The Spinelli I know would never talk to me like that.”
“The Spinelli you knew has changed. For the better I might add.”
“Spinelli…” she started to whine again until Dawn spoke up.
“Listen here Maxie, you screwed your chance with him. Leave him alone. He’s with me now.”
“No one asked you to talk.”
“I could say the same thing to you.” Dawn said stepping closer.
“Ladies, please take a step back.” Spinelli said, stepping in between them.
Dawn continued staring at Maxie, Maxie did the same to Dawn. “You know, you try and control a life that’s not yours. Then while you have his life wrapped around your little finger, you go mess around with Johnny Zacchara. No one deserves to be treated like that.”
“I didn’t do anything with Johnny! How many times have I told you that Spinelli!”
“Maxie, you admitted to have feelings for the mob prince. We’re over with Maxie.” Spinelli said and wrapped his arm around Dawn. The two walked away leaving Maxie standing there with a dazed and confused look on her face.
When Dawn and Spinelli were out of site of Maxie, Dawn stopped and looked at Spinelli. “I’m so proud of you! You actually talked for yourself.”
“A-and it felt so good!”
Dawn laughed. “Girlfriend huh?”
Spinelli blushed a little. “I-I-I ca-can explain.”
“Explain what? I like you Spinelli.”
“Really?”
Dawn nodded. “Well if I didn’t do you think I’d be doing this?”
“I guess not.” He replied with one of his cheesy grins.

The Hospital
“Looks like the two of them are getting along.” Carly told Jason while watching Morgan and Luke play.
“Yeah. It was a good idea.”
“Morgan could use somebody right now. Especially with all that’s going on with Michael.”
“Yeah.”
“So are they sticking around?” she asked.
“Who?”
“Dawn, Luke, and Katie.”
“Yeah, I think so.”
“Good.” She replied nodding her head. “I haven’t seen you like this in a long time.”
“Seen me like what?”
“You seem, I don’t know, happier.”
Jason glanced at her and then around the room. “I don’t want to get too close to her Carly.” He said real low.
“Why not Jason? You deserve to be happy.”
“I just don’t want her to get hurt anymore. She’s been through enough.”
“I don’t know her too well, but from what I’ve heard from you and Michael, she’s just like you.” Carly said with a slight laugh. “That means she’s not going to let you go as easily as you think she will.”
“I don’t know what to do Carly.”
“You tell her how you feel!”
“I don’t know what it is I feel.”
Carly shot him a look. “I know you do Jason. Listen, you will lose her forever if you do not say something.”
Jason sighed. “Alright I’ll talk to her.”
Carly let out a squeal and then hugged him.
