Chapter 14
The next morning Katie was sitting in her room thinking to herself. She had decided she was going to wait and surprise everyone with her surprise on the Fourth of July get together they were going to have at Jason’s. She couldn’t help but smile at the thought of his name. The more she was around him, the faster she was falling for him.
“Katie!” she heard Dawn call her name from the living room.
Katie got into her wheelchair and rolled into the living room. “What’s up?” she asked, and then looked over and saw Carly standing in the doorway.
“Hi, I’m Carly.” She said with a smile.
“Katie.” Katie replied, sticking her hand out to shake. Carly shook her hand and looked at Dawn.
“Me and Luke are going to go get a milkshake at Kelly’s.” Dawn told Katie and then her and Luke left.
“Um, I know it’s probably strange for me to be here, but…”
“Oh no. It’s fine. Jason’s told me a lot about you.” Katie said. “Have a seat.”
Carly smiled and sat down on the couch. “I kind of wanted to ask you something. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to invade your personal space or anything, so if you don’t feel comfortable answering just be straight forward with me.”
“Okay.”
“Do you like Jason?” she bluntly asked.
“Are you a crazy ex girlfriend?” Katie replied with a slight, nervous laugh.
“I’m an ex, but not a crazy one.” Carly laughed. “And I’m happily married.” She added, while waving her ring finger to Katie.
“I know I was just messing with you. Um, well, to be honest just between you and I, yeah I guess I do like him.”
Carly grinned. “I knew it! This is so perfect!”
Katie glanced at her. “How?”
“Well, I know for a fact Jason likes you. But I think he’s too scared to say something about it. And I know Jason too well, and if he doesn’t get the shove he needs, he won’t ever do anything.”
“If he truly likes me, he won’t need a shove. My whole life I’ve gotten hurt that way. I’m not about to let it happen again.”
“You guys seem perfect together though! I have never seen Jason seem happier than he is now.”
“I’m sorry, I mean yeah I’ll wait for him, but I’ll only be waiting for so long. I can’t just sit back and put a hold on my life waiting for Jason to say something to me.”
Carly frowned a little. “I know. It’s just that … wait a second, I’ve got an idea!”
“What?”
“The Fourth of July party. We have it at my house instead.”
“Okayy?”
“Just, I have an idea.” Carly smiled and then jumped up from the couch. “It was nice to meet you!” she exclaimed and then opened her door. There stood Jason about to knock. “Hi Jason!” she said real happily and then left. Jason watched Carly leave and then stepped inside.
“What was that about?” Jason asked.
“I have no idea.” Katie said and then laughed.

Kelly’s Diner
“Finish up that shake boy.” Dawn teased her little nephew.
“Brain freeze.” He replied with the funniest expression on his face.
Dawn laughed at him, but quickly stopped when she saw a familiar face walk in. “Luke let’s go.” She grabbed him by the arm and ran towards the bathrooms.
Mike, the owner, noticed the panic on Dawn’s face and quickly motioned for her and Luke to come around back. Dawn felt a tear roll down her cheek as her and Luke crouched down in the back. “Aunt Dawn, what’s wrong?”
“Shhhhh.” She managed to say without letting all the other tears come flooding out.
“Is there anything I can do?” Mike asked Dawn.
“Can you please not let that guy see us?”
“No problem. Just don’t move or make a sound.” Mike replied, and then went back around to the counter. “Can I help you sir?” Mike asked the strange man.
“I saw a lady with a little boy in here. Where’d they go?”
“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Mike told him.
“They’re around back aren’t they.” The man said and then tried getting past Mike, but Mike wasn’t going to let that happen. He shoved the guy back and said if he took one step past him, he’d call the law. Just before the guy had a chance to swing at Mike, Claudia walked in.
“George!” she yelled and then grabbed him by the arm. “What are you doing here?” she muttered under her breath.

McCall/Jackal PI
“Fair Samantha!” Spinelli said as Sam walked through the doors of McCall/Jackal PI.
“Hey Spinelli. Any new cases?”
“No, not yet. I was just a little curious as to if you were going to be at the Fourth of July get together?”
“As much as I’d love to, I can’t. I already promised Alexis I’d spend it with her and Kristina.”
“Ah. Well be sure to tell them the Jackal sends them hellos.”
“Sure thing Spinelli. Well hey, um I hate to come and go, but I need to go check into something. I’ll be back shortly. Go ahead and have the rest of the day off. Go get you something to eat. It’s a slow day, so have some fun.” She told him, just before leaving.
Spinelli sat back in his chair. “Hmmmm, I think I’ll go to Kelly’s.” he thought to himself, just before getting out of his chair and leaving.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“I think we’re going to have the Fourth of July thing at Carly’s now.” Katie said.
“That’s fine. Better I guess. As messy as you are, I wasn’t looking forward to the cleanup.”
Katie reached over and grabbed the couch pillow and threw it at him. He started laughing when he saw the look on her face. “Meany!” she said, sticking her tongue out.
Jason was about to say something, but his phone started ringing. “Morgan.” He answered. “Alright.” He said and then held the phone out. “It’s for you. It’s Dawn.”
Katie got a funny look on her face and took the phone. “What’s up?”
“Katie, start packing some stuff for me, you, and Luke. We have to get out of here now!”
“What’s going on Dawn?”
“One of Craig’s friends. Remember George Vennetelli? Yeah he’s here in the diner because he spotted Luke and I! Mike is distracting him, but I don’t know how long that will last. I’m going to see if there’s a back way so we can get out of here.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes I’m sure!”
“I’m not going to pack Dawn. I’m not going to let him scare us out of here. Just sit tight and Jason will be over there asap.”
Dawn sighed. You could tell the frustration she had. “You’re 100% right. We can’t let him ruin something good in our lives. Tell Jason to hurry!” Dawn said and then hung up the phone.
Katie looked up at Jason. “Get to Kelly’s now! An old friend of Craig’s is there causing trouble because he knows Dawn’s in there.”
Jason didn’t have to be told much more, he quickly left the apartment. Katie just closed her eyes and prayed they wouldn’t have to pack up and move again.

Kelly’s Diner
“George, what do you think you’re doing?” Claudia mumbled under her breath again.
“I was ordered to get the little boy and two women.”
“You will not do that.” She replied. “You work for me now, and I am telling you to leave whoever these people are alone. I’m working on something right now and I don’t want any kind of distraction.”
Dawn poked her head around and saw Claudia talking to George. Just about that time she saw Spinelli come in. “No.” she said to herself, hoping he’d leave so he wouldn’t get hurt.
He sat down at a table and looked at the menu. When he started scanning through the items, Jason came running through the doors. When he spotted Claudia talking to the guy he figured was George, he felt his blood pressure rise.
Claudia spotted Jason and quickly began trying to think of something to cover it up, but was unsuccessful. “Claudia, what a nice surprise.” Jason said while walking closer to her. Claudia kept the smug look on her face with each step he took. “Spinelli, go to the back of the diner and go out the back.” Jason told him, not even looking back at him. Spinelli didn’t argue, he just did as he said.
“Jason, you know you are one piece of work. You love just bossing people around don’t you?” Claudia finally spoke up and said.
“Don’t start with me Claudia.” Jason snapped back. Before Jason had time to react, George pulled out a gun and grabbed Claudia.
“No one move!” he yelled. Mike calmly, and un-noticeably picked up the phone and dialed 911.
Jason pulled out his gun and pointed it at George. “Shoot me, she dies.” George spat out.
“Oh you would be doing me a favor.” Jason said keeping his gun pointed at George.
“I’m carrying Sonny’s child Jason.”
“Oh don’t give me that Claudia, we all know it’s Ric’s.”
A gunshot went off and everyone hit the floor. Jason slowly sat up and looked around. Claudia began stirring around, as did Mike. George had shot himself. Jason heard the diner door open, and cops flooded in.
“What the heck happened here?” Lucky asked when his officers cleared the room.
Claudia looked at Jason and then back at Lucky. “I came in here and this guy was about to punch Mike. I grabbed his arm to stop him and that’s when Jason walked in. They guy grabs me and points a gun to my head and him and Jason start at it, and then all of a sudden he just shot himself.”
Lucky looked at the only person in the diner he’d believe, Mike. “Is it true?”
“Yes, it is.” Mike responded.
Lucky nodded and put away his gun.

Katie was sitting on the couch, waiting for some kind of news. That was until Dawn, Spinelli, and Luke walked in. “Oh my gosh, are ya’ll ok?!”
“Yeah.” Dawn replied, then sent Luke to his room. “He is so scared right now. He had a flashback to when Ben was murdered.”
“Poor thing.”
“I don’t know what to do now.” Dawn said while collapsing onto the other couch chair.
“Did Jason take care of it?”
Dawn looked at Katie and bit her lip. “He ordered us out of there, and when we got out the back, we stayed there for a moment and there was a gunshot.”
Katie got herself back in her wheelchair and headed to the door. “Where is the female version of stone cold going?” Spinelli asked.
“To find Jason.”
“If the Jackal may, I rest assure you that Stone Cold is ok.”
“I won’t believe it til I see it with my own eyes.” She replied and then left the penthouse.
“Should we go after her?”
“I don’t know.”
- - - - - - - - - -
Katie was in the elevator when her phone started ringing. “Hello?”
“Katie, right?” the voice on the other end asked.
“Yes. Who is this?”
“Claudia Zacchara. Meet me on the docks in 10.”
Katie looked at her phone and closed it. She ran her fingers through her long brown hair and opened her phone again. She dialed Jason’s number and waited for him to pick up. After a few rings it went to voicemail. “Jase, it’s me. I’m getting a little concerned now. I really wish you’d pick up your phone. I was just going to let you know, I think it’s going good with Claudia. She just called me and told me to meet her at the docks, so yeah I guess I’ll see you later.” She said and then closed her phone and put it in her pocket.
Chapter 15 preview-

Chapter 15
“Wow, on time. I like that.” Claudia smirked.
“So, you want to hire me or something?” Katie asked.
“As a matter of fact, I do.”
Katie nodded. “So when do you want me to take him out?”
“The Fourth of July party.”
Katie’s face felt like it dropped. “There’s going to be innocent kids there…”
“If you have such good aim you don’t have to worry now do you?”
“I know, but what if something like what happened to Michael happened again?” Katie asked. “You wouldn’t want to be carrying that guilt again would you?”
“Again?”
“Claudia, I know. I know people.”
Claudia took a step closer to her. “I have no idea who you are or who you’ve talked to.”
“Listen Zacchara, I can see it was an accident. That bullet was meant for Sonny. I’m just saying, I don’t like the odds of all those kids being in the house.”
“Then we’ll come up with a plan. I’ll be in the house, manage to get the kids away from Jason and you do what you’re supposed to do.”
Katie hesitated for a moment. “Fine.”
“Good.”
Katie was about to leave, until Claudia stopped her. “You’re going to be staying at the mansion tonight. I’m not taking any risks of this plan going south.”
Katie slowly nodded before following Claudia.

The Next Morning
“Dawn.” Spinelli said, as he gently shook Dawn to wake her up.
“Spinelli?” she asked as she began to stir around.
“You fell asleep on the couch.”
Dawn sat up and rubbed her eyes a little. “Yeah. I was scared about Luke. He’s still shaken up.” She told him.
“Well he went through yet another scary ordeal. I can’t possibly imagine what is running through his mind right now.”
“I know.” She said looking at her watch. “I need to go check on him.”
Dawn hopped off the couch and walked back to his bedroom. “Luke?” she said, knocking on the door. When he didn’t answer she opened his door and saw he wasn’t in there. “Luke?” she asked again and looked around his room. She looked around and couldn’t find him. “Luke?!” she yelled as she ran out of the room and started checking all the other rooms. “This isn’t funny!”
Spinelli was a little confused. “Is everything ok?” he asked.
“He’s not here Spinelli!” Dawn frantically said.
“Did you check everywhere?”
“Yes I checked everywhere, he’s not here!”
“Calm down. We’ll go look for him.” Spinelli said, and grabbed his keys. The two ran out the door.

Sonny’s Mansion
Katie pulled out the disposable phone she had and dialed a number. “McCall/Jackal PI.” The person answered.
“Is this Sam?”
“Yes it is, can I help you with something?”
“Yeah, this is Katie Weston.”
“Oh, hi! Is everything ok?”
“Not really. Can you try and get Jason to not go to the 4th of July party tonight?”
“I can try. Will you be there?”
“Unfortunately.”
“Did you not want to go?”
“I wanted to go, that was until something popped up. Long story.”
“Alright, well I’ll talk to him.”
“Thanks so much!” Katie said and then hung up. After she did Claudia walked in.
“Who was that?”
Katie stared at her for a moment. “Sam McCall.” Claudia raised an eyebrow. “Before you say anything, let me explain. I called her to get her to make sure Jason goes.”
Claudia slowly nodded her head. “Good thinking.”
“I know exactly what I’m doing.” Katie replied with a smirk.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“Hey Jason.” Sam said as she walked through Jason’s door.
“Hey Sam, what’s up?”
“Oh, nothing really” she replied, tucking her hands in her jean pockets. “You going to the 4th of July party?”
“Yeah. You?”
“No. I’ve got a case I’m working.”
“Well, we’ll miss you.”
“Then don’t go.” Sam said with a smile.
Jason shot her a funny look. “I’m going. I’ve got something to tell Katie.”
Sam bit her lip. “Jason, I’ll be honest with you.”
“Honest about what?”
“She called me. She said that she wanted me to try and get you not to go.”
“That’s not like her…”
“Jaosn, she was using a disposable cell phone.”
Jason looked around for a minute. “She’s trying to tell me something.”
“What?”
“I have no idea.” Jason said and then walked over to the table where his cell phone was sitting. He flipped it open and saw he had a new voicemail. After he listened to it he slowly shut his phone and looked at Sam. “”How did she sound when you talked to her?”
“Fine. Well just worried, but other than that, fine.”
“Remember the whole Claudia thing?”
“How could I forget. I’m still working on it..”
“Well she insisted on helping me since Claudia didn’t know who she was. I let her, and now I’m afraid something is happening because she left a message last night she was meeting Claudia at the docks.”
“That’s strange.”
“Yeah. I have no clue what is going on, but whatever it is, she doesn’t want me going to that party.”
“Alright, I’m going to be just taking stabs in the dark here. What if Claudia wants her to kill you?”
“With all those kids there?”
“It wouldn’t be the first time Claudia’s responsible for something like that. I mean Katie used to do jobs like that didn’t she? So it wouldn’t shock me if Claudia hired her.”
“Well what do I do then? Do I go to the thing to make sure everyone is safe? Do I tell Carly to cancel? Or do I not show up?”
“I honestly don’t know what to do Jason. I mean we aren’t for sure about anything. We need concrete evidence.” Jason looked blankly at the floor before Sam spoke up again. “I’ve got an idea. Just go to Carly’s have a look around. Check out any places you think Katie would go to take you out. Just in case.”
“Sam you do know Katie wouldn’t actually kill me right? Well I mean at least I hope not..”
“Of course she wouldn’t. Now let’s get to it. We don’t have much time.” Sam said and then left.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“Spinelli, we should go to the police. We’ve been looking for an hour now.”
“The queen is right.”
Dawn nodded and the two headed to the police station. When they got there, Lucky noticed them and walked over to them. “Can I help you?”
“Um, my nephew is missing.” Dawn said, her voice cracking a little.
Lucky’s face turned serious. He grabbed a chair so Dawn could sit down. “How long has he been missing?”
“I don’t know. Something happened that scared him, and he was real upset so he decided to lie down for a few minutes. I guess I dozed off, because I woke up when Spinelli got there and he was just.. gone.”
“I need an estimated time.”
“2 or 3 hours? 4 tops.”
Lucky looked down. “I can only file a missing persons report if they’ve been missing for 24 hours.”
“What?! The one time I decide to do something by the book, and you’re telling me you can’t help me?!” Dawn yelled.
“Please calm down.”
Dawn shook her head as a few tears rolled down her cheek. “I have been through a living nightmare this past month. Right before my brother died, when he asked me to take care of Luke, that’s when I knew I had to change. That boy and this man right here, have made me change for the better. Now I want you to look me in the eye, and tell me there is nothing you can do to help me find that boy? What if it was Cameron or Jake?”
Lucky stared at her for a moment. “What was it that spooked him?”
“One of Craig’s friends came to Kelly’s looking for me and him. Mike let us hide in the kitchen, but there was a gun, and well you know the situation. I guess memories of his dad came flooding back.”
“So you would say, it is possible that someone kidnapped him?”
Dawn quickly looked at Lucky and then back to Spinelli. “Oh my god.” She said before she quickly covered her mouth with her hand. “Why didn’t I think of that possibility?!” she cried out. Spinelli placed is hand on Dawn’s shoulder.
“I can have some strings pulled. We’ll find him.” Lucky reassured her.
Dawn just nodded her head and watched as Lucky left.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“Alright you’ll stay here for a while, to kind of hide. If anyone comes in here, say you’re looking for Johnny to fix your car. I parked a piece of crap out front to make your story more believable.” Claudia said to Katie.
“How generous.” Katie mumbled.
“Just don’t forget, tonight you get revenge on the man who put you in that chair.” She said just before leaving.
Katie looked around the garage she was sitting in. About 2 minutes later, the door opened and Katie about jumped out of her skin. “Sam?!”
“Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you.”
“You about gave me heart failure!”
“Sorry.”
“How did you find me?” Katie asked.
“Suspicions. I was following Claudia. Ok what is going on?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, you calling me, asking me to try and get Jason not to go when you spent a lot of time convincing him to go. And then last night you never went home and now you’re sitting in Johnny’s garage by yourself doing nothing.”
“Look. It’s not safe for Jason. Claudia hired me to take care of him. If Jason’s not there, I won’t have to make the shot.”
“Yeah, but Jason’s worried that Claudia will get mad and hurt you.”
“Ok, if you asked me what was going on, then why does it sound like you already knew?”
“We were trying to figure stuff out and that was our main guess that was going on.”
“Oh. Well tell Jason not to worry about me, and that I can take care of myself.”
“You know as well as I do that, that will not happen.”
“Sam, please. Please do not let Jason go to the party.”
Sam shook her head. “Alright, I’ll try.”
“Thank you.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Lucky walked inside Kelly’s Diner. He looked around, looking for Mike.
“Hey Lucky. Can I help you with something?”
“Have you seen a little boy, about … “ Lucky started to say before Mike cut him off.
“Check the back.”
Lucky nodded and walked back into the kitchen. Sitting there on the counter was Luke. “Hey buddy.” Lucky said as he walked over to the little boy.
“Hi.” Luke replied shyly.
“Are you ok?”
“Yes sir.”
“Your aunt and Spinelli have been looking for you.”
“I know.”
“Then why’d you run?”
“I was scared.”
Lucky looked at the little boy. “I don’t know your aunt too well, but I know that she loves you. She won’t let anything happen to you.”
“I was scared something was going to happen to her. What if she were to die just like my daddy? I wouldn’t have anyone who loves me.”
Lucky was shocked as to how this little boy felt. He kept thinking about how most kids his age should be out playing with their friends. “Let’s get you back home.” Lucky said, lifting Luke off the counter.

Chapter 16
The night had arrived, and people started showing up at Carly’s. Michael, Morgan, Kristina, and Molly were all playing games while the adults talked. Jason finally got there and he was looking around at everyone. When he spotted Michael he felt like his gut sunk down to his toes. He began wondering if it was a bad idea to show up. Maybe he should’ve just listened to Katie.
“Jason!” Carly said, snapping Jason out of his thoughts.
Jason turned around to see Carly standing there. “Carly.” He nodded.
“What’s wrong, you look tense.”
“Nothing.” He quickly replied.
“Well, where’s Katie?”
“Who?” Jason asked. “Oh I mean, I don’t know. I don’t think she’ll be here.”
Carly frowned a little. “What did you say to her Jason?” she asked while slapping him on the arm.
“Ow!!” He jumped back rubbing his arm. “I didn’t say anything!”
“She was coming! So that means you must’ve said something!”
“I didn’t. I think something just popped up.”
“Right.” Carly rolled her eyes. “Well I’m going to call her and tell her to get her butt over here!”
“You do that.” Jason said.
Carly smiled. “I will.” And then walked away.
After she left Sam walked over to Jason. “You know Katie will have my butt for not making you stay away.”
“Probably.” Jason said and then looked out the window. “Am I doing the right thing?” Jason asked, and then looked back at Sam.
“I honestly don’t know Jason. I’m going to close all the blinds.”
“Thanks Sam.” Jason said and walked over to Sonny.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dawn was standing outside Luke’s room. The two hadn’t talked since the day before. She opened his door and stepped inside his room. “Luke, we need to have a talk.”
“You hate me don’t you?” Luke asked real low.
“What? Why would I hate you?”
“I ran away.”
“Luke, you were scared. You scared me half to death when you did it, but no, I do not hate you. I could never hate you.” Dawn said as she sat down beside him. “You know if you are ever scared, or need to talk about anything you can talk to me right?”
“Yes ma’am.”
“I just want you to come to me, or Spinelli. Even Katie, Jason, Sam, Carly, any of us would be more than happy to talk to you if you ever need to.”
“I guess I just got scared. After that man at the diner..”
“I know it’s got to be scary, but I promise you I will make sure nothing happens to you.”
“It wasn’t me I was scared of getting hurt. If something happened to you I would have no one.”
Dawn pulled her nephew into a hug. “Luke, you will never be alone. I want you to know that.”
“Yes ma’am.” He said and returned the hug. “I trust you.” He said with a small smile appearing.
“Thank you.” Dawn replied, and then kissed the top of his head. “Now we better grab Spinelli and head to the party.”
“Ok!” Luke said and then jumped off his bed. The little boy ran out of the apartment, two doors down to Jason’s. Dawn locked the apartment and followed Luke.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“Jason Morgan why do you have to be so stubborn.” Katie said to herself as she watched Jason walk around the room. She also watched as Sam walked over to the window and shut all the blinds. “Oh thank goodness.”
“Do you see him?” A voice asked from behind her.
Katie turned around to see Claudia standing there. “Um, no.” she replied pretty quickly.
“That’s good. I came up here to tell you not to take the shot.” Claudia said and then sat down beside Katie.
Katie looked over at Claudia kind of confused. “What?”
“Let’s just say, I’ve had a change of heart. I was talking to an old friend and it made me realize, I have an innocent child inside of me. I know that really has nothing to do with Jason, but it seriously made me think of being a mom, and what if someone was trying to kill my son. I kept thinking of how mad I would be, and it made me realize, Jason has people who love him. Yeah he’s being a complete pain in my butt right now, but maybe me being pregnant with Sonny’s child will change things.”
“I-I-I don’t know what to say.”
“I just hope you don’t take the shot. I mean I know you wanted your revenge, but, not now.”
Katie paused and looked down at the ground. “Jason didn’t put me in this chair. My friend’s nephew and brother were kidnapped. In the process of trying to save them, my friend was taken too. I was told if I turned myself in, they’d release either the little boy, or her brother. That’s when I was shot in the shoulder. They took me to the place they were holding my friend and we managed to escape the room, but when we got to in the elevator, we reached the bottom and she jumped out just as a man jumped in. He shot me again. That is what put me in the chair.”
“You lied?”
“Had to. I wanted you to hire me.”
“Why did you want to shoot Morgan so badly?”
“I didn’t…”
“What?”
“I was never going to shoot Jason.”
Claudia looked at Katie with a confused look. Katie was debating whether to continue her story or not. “Jason was talking about Michael and his coma and stuff, well it turned into me poking my nose in his business, and I decided to try and get on your good side to find out if you were responsible for Michael’s shooting.” Katie said, and watched as she could see anger forming in Claudia’s eyes. “I know for a fact you did put Michael into a coma, but as far as everyone is concerned, that was a complete accident. Michael is awake so it can be put behind us. You’ve shown me a new side, and if Jason or Sonny will try and kill you, they’d be killing a good mother.”
Claudia nodded her head a little.
“And if they try and hurt you, I’ll stand in your corner. That’s if you don’t make any more stupid choices like that.”
“Trust me, I won’t. Now what makes me so sure that you in my corner is such a good thing?”
“You’ll see at the party.” Katie said with a smile.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dawn, Spinelli, and Luke arrived at the party. Luke saw Morgan and asked if he could go play. Dawn smiled and told him of course he could. Dawn watched as he played with Morgan, Michael, Kristina, and Molly. She couldn’t help but smile. For everything that boy has been through, he has been so strong.
“Is the queen ok?” Spinelli asked.
“Yes, I’m fine. Just thinking about some things.”
“Perhaps your late brother, Ben?”
Dawn just nodded. “We were always so close. The day I packed my things and left, he was broken. Of course I kept in touch with him, and he always tried to persuade me to stop what I was doing, but I was so stubborn I never listened. I always thought one day I would be the one to lose my life due to my lifestyle, not my brother. I mean come on, he has a son.” Dawn said, while wiping the tears of her cheek. “It’s not fair. It should’ve been me, not Ben.”
“If I may, the Jackal thinks everything happens for a reason. I mean after all this you learned how to love someone other than you with your whole heart. And you are going to leave your old lifestyle behind you. You, you, you have changed for the better. Your brother is the one that made that happen.”
Dawn smiled through the tears. “Yeah I guess he did. Well he had a little help from two others as well.”
Spinelli leaned in and kissed Dawn on the forehead.
There was a bit of a pause, but finally Dawn spoke up. “You want to dance?”
Spinelli smiled ear to ear. “I’d be honored to.” He told her and stood up with his hand reached out.

“She actually had a change of heart.” Katie replied and moved forward. Sam watched her leave in shock and confusion. That’s strange.” Sam shrugged and mumbled to herself.
“Katie?” she heard Jason ask. Katie smiled and turned herself around to see Jason standing there.
“Jason.”
“I-I thought…”
Katie cut Jason off by starting to stand up. He quickly tried to help her, but she told him not to. After her effort, she was standing right there in front of him. She quickly had a gleaming smile, which caused him to smile as well. “Your standing.” He finally said.
All she could do was smile and nod. “I know I’m not going to be running a marathon anytime soon, but it’s a start. It gives me hope.”
Jason didn’t know what came over him, but he leaned in and kissed Katie. When he pulled back, Katie looked very stunned. “You give me hope to be a better man.

Sorry I haven't been following this as closely, kt. Excellent writing! I especially loved the ending. I'll have to go back and reread.
