Hi everybody.
I just want to let you know that hubby brought me home from the hospital a few hours ago. I had a laparascopic hysterectomy, meaning that, instead of the huge abdominal incision, the surgeon makes two TINY incisions (no bigger than 2") sticks a tube into the abdomen, then grinds up and sucks out whatever's supposed to be removed. My vitals and my strength are coming back very quickly, and it's possible I might be able to go back to work sooner than thought!
I want to really thank you for your thoughts, prayers and well-wishes.
I bounced back from this thing more quickly than any one imagined. A two-hour surgery took barely an hour. The hospital and the staff were really super. They kept coming in to check on me (even during the night) and asked whether I needed anything else. Having worked in a hospital myself, I knew what they were up against, and was sure to thank them for their hard work.
I'm really glad this hospital takes post-surgical pain management seriously. Their philosophy is the same as mine. Keep the patient as comfortable as possible. That way they're able to do more sooner and even go home sooner.
The only time that was rough on me was waking up in recovery. A little hard to breathe, and my mouth was dry as a bone. But never once did I feel any real pain. Just soreness as though I'd done too many situps. As I'm typing I'm holding a pillow over my midsection because I've been coughing a lot. That's to be expected when you've had a tube down your throat for an hour or more, though.
The hospital itself is really nice as well. Only 5 miles from our home, hubby was able to run back and get anything he'd forgotten. Also, it was a short drive to go home.
At this point, coherent thoughts still take a little effort, and I'll probably sleep some more. I just wanted to thank you. --JL
