Oh Great High Mucky Muck,
Should I send you some links to some smileys a warped (?) friend made for me? I still have five or six of them stored in Photobucket. She has some kind of smiley-making software. Hence my farting smiley. I'll be out and about spending hubby's Christmas bonus today, and I'll be looking for something like that. No telling what an imagination like mine could come up with. HEHEHEHEHEHE!!

Sure, send 'em along! Or you can post them here, if that's easier (and you're comfortable with posting a link to your photobucket) -- whichever you prefer.
I'm still working on figuring out how to add the smilies -- it seems to be one of those things that takes a while to figure out, but once it works will be a snap.

Well, we're making progress -- and thanks for the tips, cutecollege! But Nellie doesn't have to leap into action yet.... I've figured out how to replace the default smileys, and have (I think) successfully put in the three that Taz sent me. I think they have to be inserted into each skin separately, which in one way is a pain (it's going to take a bit of time) but in another way is good -- you guys will have a choice of smileys as well as colors. (Anyone who has a skin named after them gets to pick the smileys for that skin, too. ;D) (Technical note: when I change the smiley settings, it seems to go back and replace the old ones, so some messages might end up looking weird if they used one of the ones that got replaced.) Since I'm still figuring out how to do this, I've only changed the images on the default skin. Here they all are: ;D There should be a donkey being smacked, among other things. ;D You guys who aren't using the default skin might see the old smileys, or might see the URL. I'll go take a look after I get done posting this, if we're getting strange results, I might have to make all the skins match. What I'm still working on is how to ADD smileys, not just replace the ones that are already there. After all, we're definitely going to want more than the paltry number they've given us to start! ;D That's going to require coding (and, I suspect, a trip to the library for me. ), so please be patient! I'm testing this stuff first on another board I set up for that purpose, so I'll be able to play around with it without worrying about accidentally trashing this place. ;D Edit: okay, the good news is that each skin can have its own smileys -- the old ones are still showing up on the skins I made! The bad news is that if you want to see the experiment for the moment, you'll have to change your skin to default. But then you can switch back. Second Edit: it just occurred to me that I'm going to have to be careful about those replacements -- it would not be good if someone clicked on a grin in their skin and it showed up as a whapped donkey to someone else. Hmmm.... *ponder*

That's okay, Mirium. I'm gonna see whether or not I can just post the smileys I have in my personal library here. If you like them, they're snaggable. The friend who made them for me is looooooong gone, and I doubt she's lurking here.

Sounds good -- I'm assuming your friend at least implied that the smileys are yours to use as you please. We wouldn't want to violate anyone's copyright, even if they were unlikely to catch us. If you think your friend would like to be credited for her creations, feel free to tell us her name; if you think she'd rather you didn't, then don't. We're only going to use smileys here that are "public use", i.e. snaggable, or that the creator has otherwise given us permission to use -- if you don't have permission, PLEASE don't get me in trouble by asking me to put it up here! When you do send me one, I'm copying the image into my Photobucket and linking to that -- it should prevent them from mysteriously turning into red Xs some day. ;D

I've snagged them, jaglady, and they'll be added as soon as I figure out how.... and thanks! They're mondo ! (sorry it's taking so long; had some time-sucking events going on in RL. )

Not really sure what some of them stand for...but I like them JL ;D Thanks, Suzy. My friend and I were moderators on a political chat forum. Trust me, things can get nasty in a hurry if you're not careful. Lots of trolls and lurkers. You might say she made these smileys in self-defense. The first one, well, I'll just be polite and say that if this were a fanfic website, that one might like the slash. Hope I don't have to explain the second. The nosepicking smiley my friend made for a troll who liked to flame and run. We finally traced this guy's IP address to a mental hospital somewhere in Toronto. Mirium should like the fourth one.

Okay, guys, things might look weird for a little while if you're using the default skin and trying to post a reply -- I'm going to try to add smileys.
Update: Yay, it worked! ;D If I've done what I think I've done, all the original smileys are there in all the skins, and nine extra ones are added. The top row is small ones, all about the same size, so the whole row doesn't use up extra space just to fit one big smiley. The second row is for larger smileys. I'm going to try to find the right balance between having all the smileys we want, without making the "Add Smilies" box annoyingly large. I'm going to go look for more, and feel free to suggest ones you'd like to add -- I'll do my best to fit them all in!
